SECTION IV
Outside of School Athletic Competition*
Once a student participates in any practice, tryout, scrimmage, or contest as part of a schoolsponsored athletic team, the student may not participate in non-school (club, AAU, travel, rec) athletic
competition in the same sport during that season without penalty.
Violation Consequences:

Middle School: Ineligibility for a minimum of the next two (2) school contests or dates of
competition
High School: Ineligibility for a minimum of the next three (3) school contests or dates of
competition
Ineligibility may extend up to the remainder of that sport season
Note: According to the MHSAA, tryouts are considered practice and therefore subject to this rule.
Limited Team Membership:
A student who, after practicing with (including tryouts) or participating in an interscholastic scrimmage or
contest as a member of a high school athletic team, participates in any athletic competition not
sponsored by his or her school in the same sport during the same season, shall become ineligible for a
minimum of the next three (3) days of competition and maximum of the remainder of that sport season in
that school year. The following exceptions to this Section will apply:
All-Star Events:
Students may not participate in any “all-star” contests in a sport sponsored by the MHSAA during the
school year.
