SECTION III
Maintaining Amateur Status*
To remain eligible for interscholastic athletic competition, students must maintain amateur status. This
means student-athletes:
1. May not accept money or any other valuable consideration for participating in athletics, sports, or
games; this restriction is separate from and does not apply to permissible Name, Image, and
Likeness (NIL) activities in accordance with applicable MHSAA guidelines.
2. May not receive compensation for officiating interscholastic athletic contests.
3. May not sign a contract or agreement to play or try out with a professional team, regardless of the
sport.
This rule applies to the following MHSAA-sponsored sports: Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country,
Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Soccer, Softball, Skiing, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball, Wrestling, Ice
Hockey, Competitive Cheer, Swimming & Diving.
Note: Accepting instructional fees or payment for coaching youth or recreational sports (not
involving school teams) may be allowed if not connected to interscholastic athletics and not tied
to performance as an athlete.
Failure to Comply: A student found to be in violation of amateur status rules shall be declared ineligible
for interscholastic competition. The student may not apply for reinstatement until one full school year
has passed from the date of the last violation. After that time, the student may submit a formal request
for reinstatement to the MHSAA.
