D. Participant Physical Examination*
A student must have an athletics physical examination completed by a physician (M.D. or D.O.),
physician assistant, or nurse practitioner certifying that the student is fully able to participate in
interscholastic athletics. The physical must be dated on or after April 15 of the previous school year to
be valid for the current school year.
The completed MHSAA physical form must be submitted electronically via FinalForms prior to any
participation in tryouts, practice sessions, or contests. Paper copies will not be accepted.
E. Seasons of Competition*
In accordance with MHSAA regulations, a student is allowed no more than four (4) seasons of
interscholastic athletic competition in a specific sport during grades 9 through 12. These seasons
must be distributed as no more than four first semesters and four second semesters of enrollment in
high school.
For example, a student may not participate in more than four seasons of a sport such as football, soccer,
or tennis, regardless of whether they begin high school early or repeat a grade. However, a student may
not participate in more than one season per sport per school year, even if that sport is offered twice
during the year and leads to an MHSAA state championship (e.g., bowling or tennis offered in both fall
and spring at different schools). Fall sideline cheer is not considered a competition season and does not
count as an additional season within the same school year as winter completive cheer.
Students in grades 7 and 8 are not limited in the number of seasons of participation in middle school
athletics.
F. Semester of Eligibility*
A student shall not be eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics after they have been enrolled in
grades 9 through 12 for more than four (4) first semesters and four (4) second semesters.
Enrollment in a school by the Monday of the fourth week of the semester in which he/she competes, or
participation in one or more interscholastic contests, will constitute a full semester of eligibility—
regardless of whether or not the student continues to participate for the remainder of the season.
Students who are otherwise eligible but choose not to participate during a semester must still count
that semester toward their eligibility total.
Students enrolled in grades 7 and 8 are not limited in the number of semesters of eligibility at the
middle school level. However, once a student enters high school (9th grade), semesters of eligibility
must be consecutive.
G. Academic Eligibility – Troy School District Requirements
To be eligible for athletic participation, student-athletes must meet both the Michigan High School
Athletic Association (MHSAA) and Troy School District academic standards:
1. Semester Eligibility (MHSAA & Troy School District Requirement)
A student-athlete must have received passing grades (credit) in a minimum of five (5) classes during
the previous semester to be eligible for participation during the subsequent semester. The following
