Level III: Major Violations (Athletic Code / MHSAA Concerns)
Examples:
• Insubordination or serious disrespect toward coaches or officials
• Ejection from contest (per MHSAA/NFHS rules)
• Bullying, harassment, or hazing behaviors
• Substance use/possession (tobacco, nicotine, alcohol, or drugs)
• Academic dishonesty affecting eligibility
• Significant school disciplinary violations
Typical Responses:
• Multi-contest suspension (aligned with MHSAA minimums for ejections)
• Temporary removal from team activities
• Mandatory parent/guardian conference
• Educational interventions (e.g., substance awareness, conduct training)
• Probationary status upon return
• Structured restorative process when appropriate to address harm and rebuild trust
Level IV: Severe Violations (Safety / Legal / Ethical Breach)
Examples:
• Fighting or physical aggression
• Hazing (as defined by law and district policy)
• Theft, vandalism, or criminal behavior
• Distribution of controlled substances
• Serious harassment, discrimination, or threats
• Egregious or repeated major violations
Typical Responses:
• Immediate suspension from team
• Removal from team for remainder of season (or longer)
• Referral to school and/or legal authorities
• Loss of awards, honors, and leadership roles
• Restorative practices may be considered in addition to responses above when appropriate and
safe
MHSAA / NFHS Enforcement
• All ejections and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties will follow MHSAA minimum requirements
and NFHS playing rules
• School consequences may exceed MHSAA minimum standards when warranted
Due Process
Student-athletes will be afforded:
• Clear communication of the violation
• Opportunity to respond
• Review by coach and/or athletic administration
• Parent/guardian notification for Levels II–IV
