SECTION XII
Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) / Personal Branding Activities (PBA)
The Troy School District permits student-athletes to participate in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL),
referred to by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) as Personal Branding Activities
(PBA), in accordance with all MHSAA regulations.
Permitted Activities
Student-athletes may engage in NIL/PBA opportunities provided that:
• Activities are independent of school teams, programs, and participation
• Compensation is not tied to athletic performance, participation, or team success
• Activities occur outside of school time and away from school-sponsored events and facilities
• The activity complies with all MHSAA rules, district policies, and applicable laws
Prohibited Activities
Student-athletes may not:
• Use school names, logos, uniforms, mascots, or facilities in NIL/PBA activities
• Imply school, district, or MHSAA endorsement
• Participate in NIL activities during school hours, practices, contests, or team events
• Accept compensation tied to performance, playing time, or team membership (pay-for-play)
• Engage in agreements arranged by coaches, school personnel, or booster organizations
• Participate in collectives or group NIL agreements
• Promote products or services that violate school policies or MHSAA standards
Disclosure & Responsibility
• NIL/PBA agreements must be reported in accordance with MHSAA requirements prior to
participation
• Student-athletes and families are responsible for ensuring compliance with all rules
• The district, coaches, or staff do not provide legal, tax, or contract guidance
Eligibility
Failure to comply with NIL/PBA rules may result in loss of athletic eligibility and/or school disciplinary
action.
Recruiting & Undue Influence
NIL/PBA opportunities may not be used to influence enrollment, transfer decisions, or team placement.
All MHSAA transfer and undue influence rules remain in effect.
