Out-of-Season Violation:
An out-of-season violation occurs at any other time during the school year, including between sport
seasons, over breaks, or during off-season training periods. In these cases, consequences will be
enforced at the beginning of the student’s next athletic season of participation, even if it occurs in the
next school year. Students may be required to fulfill additional educational or intervention requirements
prior to reinstatement.
First Violation (Tobacco/Nicotine Products Only)

Minimum 1 contest or 1 week suspension, whichever is greater
Not to exceed 10% of the regular season
Optional educational workshop on tobacco/nicotine use (cost covered by family)
Parent notification and conference may be scheduled
First Violation (Alcohol/Drugs) or Second Tobacco Violation

Minimum 2 contests or 2 weeks suspension, whichever is greater
Not to exceed 20% of the regular season
Mandatory parent meeting with coach and building administrator
Required participation in a substance education or intervention program (cost covered by family)
Any missed games at the end of a season will carry over to the next sport season of participation
Second Violation (Alcohol/Drugs) or Third Tobacco Violation

Immediate removal from the team for the current season
If less than 50% of the season remains, the athlete will be ineligible for the first 50% of the next
sport season
Required professional assessment for substance use from a Michigan Department of Healthapproved provider (cost covered by family)
Reinstatement is subject to administrative approval following documentation of assessment and
a follow-up conference
Third Violation (Alcohol/Drugs) or Fourth Tobacco Violation

Suspension from all athletic participation for 365 days from the date of the confirmed violation
Reinstatement requires evidence of intervention and administrative approval
Fourth Violation (Alcohol/Drugs) or Fifth Tobacco Violation

Permanent loss of athletic eligibility in the Troy School District
