SECTION X
Use or Possession of Tobacco, Alcohol and other Drug Substances
Student-athletes are expected to maintain a healthy and drug-free lifestyle in order to promote personal
well-being, team integrity, and competitive performance. The use, possession, sale, or distribution of any
tobacco or nicotine products (including vaping devices), alcohol, marijuana, controlled substances,
mood-altering chemicals, or performance-enhancing drugs is strictly prohibited. This policy applies at all
times, including on and off school grounds, during the athletic season, and throughout the calendar year.
The Troy School District and MHSAA prohibit:
1. Use, possession, sale, or distribution of tobacco, vaping devices, or any nicotine-based products
2. Use or possession of alcoholic beverages
3. Use, possession, sale, or distribution of marijuana, non-prescribed controlled substances, or
look-alike substances
4. Use of banned performance-enhancing drugs or supplements (as defined by the NCAA and
Michigan Department of Health)
5. Use of any prescription medication not prescribed to the student
6. Misuse of over-the-counter medication
Note: Possession or use of a legally prescribed drug is not a violation if the student has been prescribed
the medication by a licensed physician and uses it as directed.
Failure to Comply:
Middle School (Grades 7–8)
Any middle school student-athlete who violates this policy will be immediately removed from their team.
Reinstatement for future participation will only be considered following a mandatory meeting involving
the student, parent/guardian, and building administrator.
High School (Grades 9–12) Progressive Discipline Policy
Violations are cumulative throughout a student’s high school athletic career, beginning with the first day
of participation as a freshman and consequences are progressive regardless of when the violation
occurs. The student must complete the season in good standing in order for any missed contests to
count toward the consequence.
In-Season Violation:
An in-season violation occurs when a student-athlete is currently participating on an active schoolsponsored team (from the first official practice through the final contest or postseason event). Any
consequences resulting from an in-season violation will apply immediately to the current sport,
including potential suspension from practices, contests, or dismissal from the team.
