Season Expectations for Players, Parents, & Coaches
Establishing clear expectations at each level of competition helps support the development, well-being,
and success of all student-athletes. These expectations promote a shared understanding of roles and
responsibilities among players, coaches, and families—ensuring that each season reflects the core
values of growth, sportsmanship, and educational athletics within the Troy School District.
Middle School
(Grades 7–8)
Philosophy: Focus on skill development, teamwork, and fostering a love of the sport.
Coach Expectations:
• Prioritize fundamentals, effort, and inclusion.
• Foster a positive, supportive environment.
• Ensure playing time for all team members when possible.
• Emphasize teaching over winning.
Player Expectations:
• Show up ready to learn, try hard, and support teammates.
• Develop basic sport-specific skills and understand rules.
• Display good sportsmanship and respect.
• Explore interest and enjoyment in the sport.
Parent Expectations:
• Encourage participation, not just performance.
• Support coaches and players positively.
• Help students balance academics and athletics.
• Avoid pressure or overemphasis on winning.
Freshman / JV B Level
(Primarily 9th Grade)
Philosophy: Bridge middle school enthusiasm with a deeper commitment to fundamentals, effort, and
team discipline.
Coach Expectations:
• Continue teaching core skills with higher expectations.
• Introduce structured practices and team strategies.
• Begin merit-based playing time while still encouraging broad participation.
Player Expectations:
• Commit to improving and being coachable.
• Understand that playing time is earned.
• Begin focusing on fitness, work ethic, and team roles.
• Accept feedback and strive to contribute to team goals.
