Writing for Broadcasting (000342)

The goal of this course is to produce the weekly announcements. This course is designed to offer an introduction to various aspects of
video production. The focus of the course will be on video production skills like creating, filming, editing, and using the teleprompter
necessary for the production of the weekly announcements. Analysis assignments focus on critical viewing skills and scripts for
segments. The application of these concepts is present in the videos that the students produce. Students in the class do not need to be
announcers for the broadcast but do need to participate in the video production aspect of the student announcements.
Advanced Writing for Broadcasting (000362)
Grades 11-12

Students must complete Writing for Broadcasting. This course is designed to offer students opportunities to work with advanced
filming techniques and equipment. The focus of the course will be on producing the weekly announcements and will continue the
students’ growth and learning of current video techniques and editing skills. Analysis assignments focus on critical viewing skills and
scripts for segments, intros, and outros. Students in the class do not need to be announcers for the broadcast, but do need
to participate in the video production aspect of the broadcast.
Writing for Publication: Journalism (100273/200273)
Grades 9-12
Full year 1.0 credit
This course is designed for students who like to write. Students will be taught the techniques of news writing and will be expected to
research, report, and write news, feature, interview, review, and editorial articles. Students will arrange and conduct interviews inside
and outside of school. They will also become proficient with copy editing symbols, lead writing, and headlines. This course explores
the dynamics behind the expression of “power of the press” and examines press history, rights, and responsibilities. This course will
briefly cover advertising, photojournalism, and desktop publishing.
Writing for Publication: Newspaper (000333)
Grades 10-12
Full Year 1.0 credit
This course is designed to involve the student in all aspects of producing a newspaper/news magazine. The class will be organized as a
newspaper staff. Students are responsible for reporting, writing, designing layout, and using desktop publishing for articles to be
published in the school paper. They are also responsible for selling and designing advertising that appears in the publication. Accuracy
in journalistic writing skills will be stressed.
Writing for Publication: Yearbook (100343/200343)
Grades 9-12
Full year 1.0 credit
This course is designed to involve the student in all aspects of producing a concise, historical yearbook. Students are responsible
for reporting, writing, and designing layouts on computers. In addition, students will learn many marketable communication skills in
such fields as journalism, photography, graphics, advertising, and publications. Desktop publishing will be used for creating copy to
be published in the yearbook. Students will sell ads to the community and subscriptions to the student body. Accuracy in journalistic
writing skills will be stressed. Students should be able to meet after school. Students may be asked to complete a brief application.
Advanced Publication Production (100353/200353)
Grades 10-12
Full year 1.0 credit
Students must complete Writing for Publication Newspaper or Yearbook and receive instructor approval to enroll. This course is
designed to allow advanced publication students to pursue their specific interests within the realms of journalism and publication
production. Students must hold an editor position in Publications to take the course (an application is required for those positions).
