Creative Writing 1 (000182)

Meets NCAA requirements
Students must successfully complete English 9 to enroll. This course is designed as an English elective for students in grades
10-12. Students will develop a creative approach to writing by considering what the creative mindset is and
actively participating in drafting, conferencing, editing, and completing a wide range of writing assignments. Mini lessons
will be provided to help students prepare for longer writing pieces. Some of the genres which may be explored include
poetry, short stories, satirical formats, blogs, and genres of student choice. Students will be expected to engage in the writing
process and to share, critique, and analyze each other’s work.
Creative Writing 2 (000192)

Students must successfully complete Creative Writing 1 to enroll. This class is designed for students who wish
to continue their exploration of creative writing to further develop their talents and abilities. Some of the genres
which may be explored include poetry, essays, flash fiction, and short stories. Students will continue to be
expected to write a great deal and to share, critique, and analyze each other’s work. Independent projects will
also be utilized, so students have the opportunity to delve into areas in which they have the most interest.
Debate 1 (000492)

Meets NCAA requirements
Students must successfully complete English 9 to enroll. This course will provide an opportunity to learn a variety of argumentation
techniques and to practice the art of debate in styles including legislative and cross examination, as well as current law cases where
students will serve as the prosecutor or defense attorney. Critical thinking, analytical research, evidence, and reasoning will be taught
to further hone skills necessary for argumentation, debate, and speaking. Current controversial topics will be debated and researched.
This class is highly recommended for students interested in law, politics, sales, business, government, current events, or just those who
love to share their opinions.
Debate 2 (000502)
Grades 10-12

Meets NCAA requirements
Students must successfully complete Debate 1 to enroll. This course will provide an opportunity for improving an individual’s ability
to present a formal debate. Students will continue developing their debate skills, analytical and research skills learned in Debate I.
Debate II students will be trained as a judge and a presiding officer and will serve in that capacity for Debate I. Students will also
participate in a current law case and will serve as a prosecutor or a defense attorney.
Film and Literature (000212)

Students must successfully complete English 9 to enroll. This course is designed as an English elective for students in grades 10-12.
The focus of the course will be on the study of film vocabulary, film genre, film-making techniques, film history, film as an art form,
and film as a style of communication in our society. Assignments will focus on film viewing, application of film vocabulary, and
writing critiques of film. Through reading about and watching films, critical viewing skills will be developed, as will writing,
discussion, and presentational skills (video essays and podcasts) about the content.
