Meets NCAA requirements
This English course is required for all 9th grade students. Completion of both 9th and 10th grade foundational English courses will
prepare students to engage with future English courses, including Advanced Placement courses, should they elect to do so. This
course offers a rigorous curriculum and includes in-depth study and analysis of multiple genres of reading and a variety of modes of
writing and speaking in a class structure that allows students the opportunity to practice skills and strategies daily. Drafts and
revisions based on teacher modeling and feedback support literary analysis, argumentative, and narrative writing. Class struc ture,
including dedicated in-class time for reading, writing, and speaking, choice, and frequent, timely feedback, will foster growth in
students’ reading, writing, and speaking skills.

This English course is required for all 10th grade students. Students must have successfully completed English 9. Completion of
both 9th and 10th grade foundational English courses will prepare students to engage with future English courses, including
Adva nced Placement courses, should they elect to do so. This course offers a rigorous curriculum that builds upon the
foundational skills established in English 9. Students will expand critical thinking skills using multimodal texts and analytical
lenses. Students will engage in several real-world writing tasks to develop voice and argumentation skills, with a specific
consideration for purpose and audience. In addition to reading whole-class selections and participating in book clubs, students will
select reading goals to develop an independent reading plan and explore what multimodal literacy means.

This course introduces students to some of the most influential and enduring works of American literature. Through short stor ies,
novels, dramas, and historical texts, students will explore central themes such as identity, freedom, justice, the American Dream, and
societal change. Texts may include classic works such as The Great Gatsby, A Raisin in the Sun, Fences, and/or other timeless
works. The course emphasizes critical reading, textual analysis, historical context, and writing. The course also include s focused
sessions on preparing for the SAT.
English 11 Semester 1 – Contemporary American Literature (001011)

This course examines the contemporary landscape of American literature, focusing on how contemporary writers grapple with the
promises and contradictions embedded in the American experience. Through novels, short stories, poetry, essays, and plays, st udents
will explore themes such as freedom, equality, justice, identity, race, immigration, and belonging 4 ideals tested across generations.
Texts may include contemporary works such as Kindred, King James, Sweat, and/or other present-day publications. This course
emphasizes critical reading, textual analysis, historical context, and writing. The course also includes focused sessions on preparing
for the SAT.
