Life Skills
Parenthood/Child Development (1007242)
Grades 10-12

This class is eligible for college credit at Oakland Community College.
The rewards and responsibilities of parenthood are tremendous; both will be explored in this course. This one
semester course provides students with a background in basic child development principles in order to increase
understanding of how humans develop and grow physically, socially, intellectually, and emotionally from birth
to the first year. Students will be introduced to basic childcare and parenting knowledge as well as skills which
students can use now and in the future. Note: This elective semester course will contain family planning
instruction (birth control methods).
Parenthood/Child Development 2 (007262)
Grades 10-12

This class is eligible for college credit at Oakland Community College.
Child development 2 is a one semester course that focuses on child development and guidance, including the physical,
social, emotional, and intellectual development of preschool -elementary age children. Students will have the
opportunity to identify, plan, and demonstrate developmentally appropriate activities to use when working with
preschool-elementary age children. The class provides a foundation for future study for students interested in working
with children in career areas. Students must have completed Parenthood/Child Development 1 .
Essential Skills for Adulthood (009862)
Grades 9-12
1 semester 0.5 credit
This course helps students prepare for life after high school by teaching essential life skills. Students will work through practical units
to build knowledge and skills for handling real-world challenges. Topics Covered include: Personal Finances: Budgeting, managing
money, understanding credit, and filing taxes. Career Preparation: Exploring career options, developing employability skills, and
planning for college or vocational training. Independent Living: Grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, and basic clothes mending.
Home and Vehicle Maintenance: Basic home repairs and car upkeep. Healthy Relationships: Building positive friendships and
romantic relationships, recognizing toxic behaviors, and setting boundaries. Life Skills: Goal setting, problem-solving, and creating a
plan for independent living. Students will also practice preparing meals, participate in field trips, and explore high-demand careers
through hands-on activities, applying the skills they learn in real-world scenarios. This course provides a strong foundation for a
smooth transition into adulthood.
Personal Money Management (007272)
Grades 9-12
1 semester 0.5 credit
This course satisfies ½ credit of math related graduation requirement. Personal Money Management presents essential knowledge and
skills to make informed decisions about real world financial issues. Students taking Personal Money Management will demonstrate
knowledge of money management, including banking, saving and budgeting; consumer behaviors-values, decision making, purchases
of big-ticket items-transportation and housing. Students will learn financial responsibility through participation in a simulation of a
real-world economic activity in classroom economy. They will earn a paycheck and experience bill paying. Ex: the rent of their desks.
By the end of the course, the students will understand how to make wise spending, saving, and credit decisions and to make effective
use of income to achieve personal financial success.
Foods and Culture (Held at Troy High) (007292)
Grades 9-12
1 semester 0.5 credit
This course satisfies ½ credit of math related graduation requirement. Foods and Culture is a laboratory-based class where
students learn basic food preparation skills and terminology while becoming familiar with the tools of the kitchen and their
proper use. We will discuss food substitutes to benefit health as well as have the opportunity to utilize practical shopping skills
for food preparation on a budget. In this class students will learn and practice kitchen safety, accurate measuring techniques and
follow food safety guidelines. They will have opportunities to attend field trips, explore working with a team through hands-on
activities and put the skills learned in class into practice.
